Crystal Cabural believes healthy people make healthy communities, and that exercising should be enjoyable.

As the owner of Functional Fitness, located at 190 Memorial Ave. in Orillia, she’s strived for this since 2015.

Crystal, who has a background in physiotherapy assistance, started her business to provide exercise services to those who have been affected by conditions such as stroke, orthopedic surgeries, or Alzheimer’s disease.

Now, Functional Fitness supports anyone looking to improve their health with effective movement, bridging the gap between the traditional gym setting and the rehab world.

“We provide more supports than most gyms,” explains Crystal. “We’re a place for people living with physical limitations who want to continue to improve or maintain what they’ve gained through physiotherapy.”

Crystal says the Orillia Area Community Development Corp. (CDC) helped her gauge the pulse of the community’s health needs.

“They’ve helped me adapt with the changing needs of the community,” she notes. “Launching a business can be a lonely journey, and the CDC has always been there to show me the next stride to keep going.”

With their support and her hard work, Crystal has proudly grown her business.

“I’ve used their resources for budgeting, networking, and marketing,” adds Crystal. “They’ve been a pool of knowledge, exposing me to business services I might need but didn’t know existed. They’re very good at connecting businesses with experts.”

Crystal has also utilized the CDC’s youth wage subsidy program to hire a second staff member.

As well, she received their annual Community Capacity Building Fund grant to attain an Urban Poling Instructor certification.

“We ran classes through the City of Orillia to teach people how to use walking poles throughout the community,” notes Crystal. “Orillia is a walkable city with beautiful trails. Nordic Walking gives an extra boost to a pleasurable walk.”

Crystal is now expanding her hours into the evenings to run classes that accommodate clients who work during the day but want to take advantage of the focused exercise regimen available at Functional Fitness.

And she knows the CDC will have some role to play in any future plans, too.

“I’ve never been turned away,” says Crystal. “Their openness, patience and understanding has been very beneficial.”
