As an immigrant to Canada from a completely different part of the world, I faced a multitude of challenges that tested my resolve. Despite arriving equipped with extensive technical expertise and education, I encountered immense obstacles in getting my credentials recognized, with many employers wary of hiring someone like me. It was during a presentation at an event that I first came across the Orillia Area Community Development Corp. (CDC).

Intrigued by their services, I reached out and enrolled in the Youth Pathways to Employment program. What truly set this experience apart was how my unique challenges—far from the norm—were never dismissed; instead, my dedicated employment counselor, Katie Maracle, worked tirelessly to tailor support to my specific needs. Whether arranging food assistance during desperate times or creatively networking to connect me with employers who could leverage my skill set, Katie helped me build essential bridges, facilitate effective communication, and foster the trust that ultimately led to my successful employment.

The program’s effectiveness stems not just from its comprehensive services, but from the sincerely dedicated individuals who actively join in the journey, pivoting as needed to ensure success. This, I find, is what makes it possible to empower young, capable minds to become healthy, contributing members of society.
