The Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA) was proclaimed on October 19, 2021. This legislation is the enabling corporate legal framework for most nonprofits incorporated under provincial law. Nonprofits will have three years after proclamation to transition to the new rules.

Find out how the new legislation affects your organization and how you can prepare.

Downtown Orillia business aims to 'make dogs feel better'

Colleagues suggested to Wall that she investigate the federal government’s Regional Relief and Recovery Fund. When she Googled it, up came the Orillia Area Community Development Corp., (CDC), the organization administering the funds.

“Here I had been across the street from the CDC offices for over three years and I had no idea of what kind of services they offered,” said Wall. “Now I’m so thankful that they exist. Without their assistance, it would have been a lot more difficult to be successful at getting this loan.”

Pathways to Employment  Testimonial: DWN Craft Chocolatier

"DWN Craft Chocolatier is a new business and in order to grow, I needed some help. Participating in the Youth Employment Program has allowed me to pass along my production duties so that I could focus on building the business. It has also allowed me to teach the craft of being a chocolatier.

Traditional kitchen culture can be very toxic and heavy-handed from the top down. As a woman-led business, I want the environment to be collaborative and not competitive. I see myself in the role of a coach who fosters independence, time management skills, and pride in their evolving skillset. My management style is led by the belief that I am here to set people up for success and to learn how to work with a person to get the best out of them."

Horseshoe Valley home to 'ultimate wellness escape'

“We realized people need a place like Vettä in our society, that recharging, rejuvenating, connection. And being that there was only one other Nordic spa in Ontario at that time, we were intrigued. It’s an amazing opportunity, and it’s so needed, especially since we have all felt so disconnected during the pandemic.”

Orillia Area Community Development Corp. (CDC) General Manager, Wendy Timpano, remembers the day Harkonen came into the CDC boardroom to explain his vision. “I remember thinking, wow, what an amazing idea, that this is an incredible opportunity, and we at the CDC needed to be at the table to help Eric achieve his vision.”

And achieve it he did. With the backing and support of the Orillia Area CDC and North Simcoe Community Futures, Harkonen was able to get introductions to other community partners throughout the region and get the funding and partnerships he needed to make this 16-million-dollar dream come to life.
